George Nader, who died in February, was a fine actor who never really made it big, which is maybe fortunate for us because at least he got to star in movies like Four Guns to the Border (1954), Six Bridges to Cross (1955), The Second Greatest Sex (1955), Four Girls in Town (1957), and Das Haus der tausend Freuden (House of 1,000 Dolls, 1967). Now we're kinda wondering if he was choosing his film roles with the aid of a numerologist. Who knows? Among his other accomplishments was a starring role in one of our favorite movies of all time, 1956's The Unguarded Moment (1956), an Esther Williams melodrama (yes, that Esther Williams, and she's dry as a bone throughout most of the film), about a schoolteacher who is terrorized by one of her students (John Saxon). You probably think we're making all this up, but wait, there's more: The Unguarded Moment had a story by Rosalind Russell! Despite Nader's lack of major success in the USA, he apparently found steady work in Europe in the 1960s, where he starred in a German film series as FBI agent "Jerry Cotton." Just as soon as our antidepressants kick in we promise to type up Nader's filmography and include all those German titles. |

We recently came across the photo above in our George Nader files and have been unable to identify its origin. On the back somebody has written the names "Anne Francis" and "George Nader." Well, any fool can see that the lady is very definitely not Anne Francis. It is, of course, the lovely Joanna Moore, who passed away back in 1997. Shamefully we admit we've never expanded our Joanna Moore tribute over in the Potpourri Lounge; in fact, we didn't even know Moore had left us until we read an interview with Tatum O'Neal (Moore's daughter) in the January Premiere magazine. By the way, did you notice Tatum and her dad (Ryan) on the the back of the March 1 Entertainment Weekly? They were in a Gap ad! But, as usual, we digress like hell. As for the photo above, we think it might be from 1958's Appointment with a Shadow, which featured both Nader and Moore. However, the two also appeared in Flood Tide the same year. We're going to appoint a committee to look into this. |
