Guy Madison

1922-1996

If looks were all that mattered in showbiz (and if photographers could always be trusted to capture only a performer's best angle), Guy Madson would have been bigger than Gable, bigger than Eastwood, even bigger than Elvis. As it was, Mr. Madison was big enough in his own right. He worked in films steadily through the mid and late 1940s, peaked in action films of the 1950s, and eventually wound up in foreign films in the 1960s. For much of his career he seemed to specialize in westerns and at least one of them, 1956's The Beast of Hollow Mountain, had a dinosaur in it! When was the last time you saw a dinosaur western?

On TV Madison was Wild Bill Hickok, but budget restrictions for the small screen kept dinosaur appearances to a minimum, so Madison had to bounce his drop-dead looks off Andy Devine (above left) instead. We haven't seen the TV series lately, but we can happily recommend any of the films listed below.
