Lex
Barker
1919-1973
| On screen he was the tenth Tarzan, showing up right after Johnny Weissmuller dropped the loincloth, that is, retired from the loincloth. Off screen Alexander (Lex) Crichlow Barker, Jr. was from a socially prominent family and was listed in the New York Social Register. He also married Lana Turner and, according to her daughter, Cheryl Crane, was a less than perfect stepfather. But the main thing that concerns us here at the Meeker Museum is that Lex Barker was, well, great looking and always an interesting presence on film. Altogether he made five Tarzan films, appeared in westerns and adventure films, and even turned up in Federico Fellini's La Dolce Vita. That's quite a resume. Did we mention that he was, well, great looking? Since we have a number of photos of this guy, we keep thinking we're going to get around to doing a full gallery devoted to him. For now we'll just represent him with a portrait, a comic book cover, and a partial filmography. |
