Tab Hunter

Lafayette Escadrille

Director: William A. Wellman
1958

Here's another performer whose very name stands for an entire era of American movies, and yet you won't find even one Tab Hunter movie on that American Film Institute list of the "100 Most Tedious Movies Nobody In Their Right Mind Wants To See Again." Believe it or not, the AFI voters actually managed to come up with a Troy Donahue movie for their tired list (bet you can't guess which one), but not a single Tab Hunter movie rescues the thing. What we'd like to know is just how those cineastes at the AFI managed to give voting privileges to that many people who obviously never saw Island of Desire, Ride the Wild Surf, Operation Bikini, Battle Cry, Gunman's Walk or even War Gods of the Deep! You may think we're being kind of tongue in cheek with these ravings, but, what the hell, we're pretty much tongue in cheek about everything, including the collapse of western civilization, which is due any day now.

As for Tab Hunter, we really do consider him to be one of the most under-appreciated talents of the past two millenniums, and we won't be at all surprised if he and the Engergizer Bunny both make it all the way through to the next millennium. Certainly photographs of Tab Hunter will survive throughout all the coming ages so that future generations will have a very clear idea about what the ideal man looked like in the 20th Century. With that in mind we tried to include in this section a few odds and ends that may be of particular interest for Tab Hunter fans.
