Troy
Donahue
1936-2001
He perfectly represents an almost forgotten era of the early sixties, an innocent time before the assassinations started, before the Beatles arrived, before the counterculture exploded, before all the chaos and craziness began. Although he had not appeared in an "important" film in a number of years, we'll miss him and always regret that he never found a way to return to his former glory. And with him now totally unavailable, there's little hope of Hollywood ever giving us Parrish II or even Palm Springs Weekend II.
It's interesting to note that legendary film critic Pauline Kael passed away soon after Troy left us. Perhaps the two bumped into one another on the voyage to the hereafter. And, if so, wouldn't you love to know what they talked about? After all, didn't Ms. Kael consider Godfather Part II to be one of the greatest films of all time? Obviously, we consider Susan Slade to be far superior entertainment, but Godfather Part II is at least worth mentioning for the fact that Troy portrayed a character named "Merle Johnson" -- which was Troy's real name!
Yes, we'll miss him, but, as with so many others who've left us, at least we have the movies to remind us that real Gods and Goddesses once roamed the earth.
